Best free screen recorder for Windows

There’s no single best free screen recorder for Windows; it depends on what you’re recording. Here’s what the main free options are good at and where each falls short, based on what users report in reviews and forums.

OBS Studio: the most powerful, the hardest to learn

Free, open source, no watermark, and it can do almost anything: scenes, overlays, streaming, multiple audio tracks, hardware encoding. Users call it overkill for simply recording the desktop with a webcam, and output settings confuse beginners. If it crashes while recording to MP4, the file is lost, so the usual advice is to record to MKV and convert afterwards.

Best for: streaming and complex setups.

ShareX: fast captures, no editor

Free and private, with hotkeys that capture and then run steps for you: annotate, upload, copy a link. It’s Windows only, the interface is dense, and there’s no editor after recording. A reliable pause and resume has been requested since 2017.

Best for: quick captures and screenshots.

Snipping Tool and Xbox Game Bar: already installed

Both come with Windows 11. Snipping Tool records part or all of the screen but not your webcam, and GIF export stops at 30 seconds. Game Bar records one app window and can’t record the desktop or File Explorer. See how to record your screen on Windows 11 with audio.

Best for: a quick clip with nothing to install.

Clipchamp: bundled with Windows

Clipchamp comes with Windows and Microsoft 365 and includes a recorder and an editor. Users reported recordings being downscaled to a grainy quality after a July 2025 update, so check your export settings.

Best for: simple edits in a familiar Microsoft app.

Panwise: polished results without learning an editor

Panwise records a screen or a window with system audio, your microphone and your webcam, each on its own track. It notes where you click and turns those clicks into zooms you control, so a quick take looks edited. Recordings are saved to your disk as you go, so a crash doesn’t lose them. The free version has no time limit and no watermark, and exports up to 1080p; Pro, billed monthly or yearly, adds 4K, captions and share links.

It also takes screenshots, blurs emails and keys on screen automatically, and lets you rewind and re-record a mistake instead of starting over. It runs on Windows 10 and 11, and hardware encoding keeps it light on older PCs.

Best for: tutorials, product demos and recordings you’ll share.
